Perez Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Lavandeira, is recovering in a hospital after reportedly engaging in self-harm during a TikTok livestream. Emergency services were called to his Miami residence on Tuesday after viewers contacted authorities concerned about the blogger's well-being during the live broadcast.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office confirmed that an individual was "safely recovered" and transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Police stated that their crisis response unit and mental health professionals were on the scene to provide support and resources to the individual's family. Hilton was alone in his home at the time of the incident, according to police. His TikTok account was suspended shortly thereafter.
In a statement to various media outlets, the Miami sheriff's office did not name Hilton but confirmed their response to reports of a man harming himself. Deputies reportedly "tactically disengaged" after speaking with family members at the scene, choosing to continue monitoring the situation. The statement emphasized that in such mental health crisis situations, deputies often prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and communication opportunities. This approach, police noted, can reduce the likelihood of a "suicide by cop" encounter and minimize risks to all involved, unless there is an immediate threat to others.
