Internet personality Perez Hilton, born Mario Lavandeira Jr., remains in the hospital following a disturbing TikTok livestream Tuesday night that involved self-harm with a knife. His family confirmed he is receiving medical care, stating they are "incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support and prayers" and that their "focus right now is on his well-being."
Law enforcement responded to Hilton's Miami home after concerned fans alerted 911 to his behavior during the livestream. Surveillance video captured multiple police cars arriving at the residence shortly after 7 p.m. Officers attempted to coax Hilton out of the home, with a deputy heard saying, "Mario it’s the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, please step out of the house." Some clips from the livestream, which have since been taken down, reportedly showed Hilton covered in blood while holding a knife.
Authorities stated that deputies prioritized de-escalation techniques in the situation, noting that "unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilizing crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimize the risk of injury to the individual, deputies, and the public."
Ultimately, Hilton was safely recovered and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Crisis Response Unit and Licensed Mental Health Professionals remained at the scene to provide support to his family. Hilton's TikTok account has since been suspended.
Representatives for Hilton stated they had not been able to make direct contact with him but expressed concern for his health and well-being. The incident has drawn reactions from celebrity friends and fans, with many sending messages of support and urging him to seek help. Some critics also raised concerns about TikTok's platform policies regarding such content.
This event follows a recent health scare for Hilton, who revealed in March that he had spent 21 days in the hospital battling sepsis. He attributed the severe infection to taking flu medication on an empty stomach, which led to multiple medical crises and required two surgeries. During his recovery, Hilton spoke about a profound experience where he felt he "found God" and experienced what he described as a miracle.
Hilton, a father of three, has previously acknowledged past controversies stemming from his celebrity blogging career, expressing regret for what he described as "awful decisions" made during his "enfant terrible phase" when attention was his primary motivation. He clarified that he continues in "celebrity journalism" rather than gossip.
