Perez Hilton has entered a residential treatment program as he continues to recover from a suicide attempt that occurred last month. His family shared an update on his health, stating that he is focusing on his mental well-being following weeks of hospitalization for physical injuries.
"After weeks in the hospital receiving treatment for his physical injuries, Perez entered a residential treatment program where he can focus fully on his mental health and recovery," the statement read. The family indicated that Hilton is expected to remain in treatment for "several more weeks, potentially longer," depending on his recovery progress.
During his time in the program, Hilton, born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., will not have access to a phone or laptop, and contact with family will remain limited as he concentrates on his recovery. His family also took the opportunity to debunk several "false reports" that have circulated regarding his health since his hospitalization.
Specifically, they addressed claims that the 48-year-old blogger believed it was 2016 and was experiencing significant memory loss. "To be clear, Perez has not lost ten years of his memory, does not believe it’s 2016, and is not confused about where he is. He is lucid and communicates clearly with his family," they clarified. They also refuted reports of him being covered in gauze or stitches, and denied any requests for Katy Perry to visit him.
The family also provided an update on Hilton's three children, who were with their grandmother at the time of the incident. "His three children remain together, safe, and doing well in the care of their grandmother, who has stepped in to care for them full-time during this unexpected chapter." The priority for the children, Mario, Mia, and Mayte, is to maintain stability and normalcy during their father's recovery. Their grandmother, Teresita Lavandeira, filed for temporary custody of the children on August 7th following Hilton's suicide attempt.
