The Pentagon has officially confirmed the identity of Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad, who was killed in action during an enemy attack on a U.S. base in Jordan last week. The confirmation came from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System.

Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York, was posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. The other three service members killed in the attack have also received posthumous promotions.

The attack occurred on July 17, 2026, at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. This incident comes amidst heightened tensions and a period of declared "major combat operations" against Iran by President Donald Trump, announced on February 28, involving massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes.

Separately, Iran has reported making progress in talks with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz, though specific details were not immediately available.
