The Penrith Panthers rugby league club has encountered criticism from supporters regarding its partnership with the Australian clothing brand Ringers Western. The controversy emerged after a fan questioned the brand's sponsorship during a recent game, citing media reports about the family history of the brand's founders.
Ringers Western was established by siblings James, Emma, and Matteo Salerno. Their father, James Gino Salerno, founded a group in Western Australia described by media organizations as a cult, which he consistently denied.
During legal proceedings, prosecutors alleged that followers of the Ideal Human Environment, as the group was called, referred to James Gino Salerno as "Taipan" and transferred their assets and income to him. James Gino Salerno was convicted in 2019 on sexual abuse charges, but these convictions were later overturned on appeal. The charges were withdrawn before a retrial after the complainant indicated an unwillingness to testify again. James Gino Salerno has maintained his innocence and has no existing criminal convictions.
The controversy gained renewed attention when Ringers Western publicly supported television personality Karl Stefanovic after his podcast interview with British activist Tommy Robinson. Robinson, who co-founded the English Defence League, has a history of criminal convictions.
In response to the criticism, Ringers Western executive director Emma Salerno stated that the company would continue its sponsorship of "The Karl Stefanovic Show." She emphasized the company's motto, "Stickin Together," and stated their belief in supporting freedom of speech. Nine, the network associated with Stefanovic, distanced itself from the podcast, noting it was independently produced. Stefanovic and Nine have since parted ways.
The backlash extended to the Penrith Panthers, with a fan expressing disappointment on Facebook about the club's association with Ringers Western. The fan referenced reports about the Salerno family's history, suggesting the club should be more discerning about its sponsors.
The post generated numerous comments, with some supporters defending Ringers Western as a reputable Australian business and others arguing that sports and politics should remain separate. Conversely, other fans agreed with the original post, asserting that teams have a responsibility to align themselves with appropriate brands.
The Panthers announced their partnership with Ringers Western in May, with CEO Matt Cameron highlighting shared values of "grit, authenticity and a deep connection to community." The sponsorship includes Ringers Western providing suits for the team and serving as a game-day partner. Ringers Western also sponsors other rugby league teams, including the Wests Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs.
