Penny Hardaway Invests $2.6 Million of Personal Funds into Memphis Tigers' Revenue Share

Memphis Tigers head coach Penny Hardaway is injecting $2.6 million of his own salary into the team's revenue share, a substantial personal investment aimed at bolstering the roster for the upcoming college basketball season. Hardaway, who earns $2.9 million annually, is contributing nearly his entire salary, bringing the Tigers' total revenue share to $9 million.

Hardaway stated that the decision to contribute was his own, clarifying that the university did not request the investment. This move comes as the Memphis program faces what is being described as a make-or-break year. The team is looking to rebound after a challenging 2026 season, which saw them finish with a 13-19 record, their worst under Hardaway since his tenure began in 2018.

The Tigers have welcomed nine new players via the transfer portal for the upcoming season, including Rihards Vavers from Washington State and Brandin Cummings from Pitt. The program also anticipates the addition of Nemanja Popovic, who played professionally in Poland.

Hardaway, a native and former player for Memphis, is entering his ninth season as head coach. The team reached the NIT in 2021 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022, but has not achieved significant postseason success in recent years. The coach acknowledged the pressure, stating, "I didn’t want to fail two years in a row, because I already know what that means for me."

Hardaway's contract extends through April 2028, suggesting job security. However, the performance of the Tigers in the upcoming season, particularly their ability to reach and win in the NCAA Tournament, is expected to be crucial for the coach's future with the program.
