Agostino Abbatiello, 24, a student at Pennsylvania State University accused of leading a cocaine trafficking operation, was released from Centre County Correctional Facility after his parents posted $250,000 bail.
Exclusive photos showed Abbatiello being embraced by his parents, Mario and Danielle, shortly after his release on Thursday evening. He had changed from his prison attire into a blue suit and carried his belongings in a transparent bag. His parents reportedly paid the bail on their credit card and are believed to have driven him to their home on Long Island. Abbatiello has been held at the facility since August, facing multiple felony charges including possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy. He has not yet entered a plea.
Authorities identified Abbatiello as the alleged ringleader of a cocaine trafficking network that supplied drugs to campus fraternities. His co-defendant, Thomas Robinson, who was arrested in December 2023, cooperated with a grand jury investigation and identified Abbatiello as the main supplier. Robinson has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
During his preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Abbatiello appeared to be jittery. His parents, Mario, who owns an asphalt business, and Danielle, CEO of Deco Home Hogar Inteligente, were present in the courtroom. Abbatiello's attorney, Philip Masorti, stated that the bail funds were not illegally obtained, a condition set by the court.
Testimony from a close friend and fraternity brother, Lars Zeepvat, detailed Abbatiello's alleged involvement in drug sales. Zeepvat described how Abbatiello would procure cocaine, initially for personal use among fraternity members, before the operation scaled up to selling drugs. Zeepvat testified that Abbatiello began referring to himself as "the Godfather" during his senior year as his drug business grew, leading to more extravagant purchases and a gambling habit. Abbatiello was also a student in the university's unsanctioned Sigma Chi fraternity.
Abbatiello's academic record indicates strong performance, including graduating in May 2024 with an accounting degree and a 3.3 GPA, and making the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters. His lawyer mentioned that at the time of his arrest, Abbatiello was working as a financial advisor in Boca Raton, Florida.
As a condition of his bail, Abbatiello has surrendered his passport, must reside with his parents, remain sober, cannot contact witnesses, and must be driven to all future court proceedings by his parents. The family home must also be kept weapon-free.
Fourteen individuals have been charged in connection with the alleged drug trafficking ring at Penn State. Several others, including Zeepvat, Thomas Robinson, and Mohammed Huraibi, have also been charged and waived their preliminary hearings. Thomas Robinson's father, Paul Robinson, faces charges of felony tampering and hindering apprehension for allegedly concealing evidence.
