Pennsylvania Homeowner Faces Backlash Over Halloween Decorations

A Halloween display featuring figures dressed as bodies hanging from trees outside a Pennsylvania home has sparked controversy, with the local NAACP chapter demanding its removal due to its resemblance to lynching.

The decorations, located at an unidentified resident's home in Bristol Borough, Bucks County, consist of figures wrapped in bags and suspended from a tree. Critics have condemned the display for evoking painful historical imagery for Black Americans.

"This is not about restricting Halloween celebrations or freedom of expression. It is about historical awareness, empathy, and respect for our neighbors," the Bucks County NAACP stated in a Facebook post.

The homeowner, who purchased the decorations as a kit online, told NBC 10 Philadelphia that he did not intend to offend anyone. Some residents also view the display as a typical Halloween decoration, with one local, Mike Wade, stating, "It's Halloween. My house is scary. My house is always scary."

However, others find the display deeply disturbing, recalling the history of racist lynchings that targeted Black Americans throughout the 20th century. The issue was raised at a borough council meeting, where officials confirmed they had contacted the homeowner about removing the decorations. According to officials, the homeowner refused, stating that they were intended as Halloween decorations and that the borough has no ordinance prohibiting such displays.

The decorations remained in place as of Saturday, the report stated. This incident echoes similar controversies in other areas regarding Halloween decorations that have been perceived as racially insensitive or historically charged.
