A small Pennsylvania farm is recovering after a carjacking incident earlier this month led to significant losses of produce and equipment. The incident occurred when an employee of Hayday Farms was stopped at a traffic light en route to a Philadelphia farmers market. According to farm owner Hank Whittenberg, a man wearing scrubs approached the van, struck the employee in the face, and then stole the vehicle, which was packed with freshly harvested produce.
The employee sustained a black eye but is reportedly recovering well. Bensalem police recovered the van two days after the theft. However, the five-acre farm sustained thousands of dollars in damages. The van itself was damaged, and much of the produce inside, including cantaloupes, tomatoes, and corn, was spoiled.
In addition to the produce, the carjacker also stole a cash box, a supply of honey, and scales. Whittenberg estimated that it could take several weeks before the van is operational again. The lingering smell of rotting produce inside the damaged vehicle was eventually replaced by chlorine and another unidentified scent.
Following the setback, Whittenberg launched a GoFundMe at the encouragement of supporters. The community responded with overwhelming generosity, raising more than $11,000 as of Monday, exceeding the initial fundraising goal. Whittenberg expressed his gratitude, stating he was stunned by the response and overwhelmed by the community's support for the farm.
