Penix Shows Frustration as Falcons Fall to Ravens in Overtime
Injured quarterback watched from the sidelines as backup Tua Tagovailoa threw a game-ending interception.
The Atlanta Falcons' overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens was underscored by the visible frustration of injured starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. on the sidelines.
Penix sustained a rib injury late in the fourth quarter after being sacked by Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson. With their starting quarterback sidelined, the Falcons brought in backup Tua Tagovailoa, a former Miami Dolphins starter, to lead the team in overtime. The extra frame concluded when Tagovailoa threw a game-sealing interception to Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton, a pass intended for Drake London.
Penix, who had thrown for 240 yards and one touchdown before overtime, was observed interacting with trainers with a towel over his head. Following Tagovailoa's interception, his demeanor shifted from stoic to visibly disappointed.
The Ravens secured the 30-23 victory largely due to the performance of backup quarterback Tyler Huntley. Huntley led Baltimore to a game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion in the final minute of regulation, and then scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run in overtime.
Jessie Bates III contributed an early score for the Falcons, returning a recovered fumble 36 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Despite Bijan Robinson's 86 rushing yards, Penix's five-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts was Atlanta's only offensive touchdown of the game, contributing to their season record of 2-3.
Baltimore trailed 23-15 late in the fourth quarter before Huntley connected with Devontez Walker for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 40 seconds remaining. Henry then converted the two-point conversion with a direct snap run. The touchdown drive was set up after Falcons cornerback Mike Hughes left the game with an injury, forcing backup Mike Ford to cover Walker.
