Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has offered a strong suggestion about California Gov. Gavin Newsom's potential presidential aspirations, describing him as "hardworking" and "responsible" and indicating that a White House run would occur at some point in the future.
Pelosi, who is nearing retirement, was asked at a Politico event about the possibility of both Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris entering a future presidential race. She initially responded with a desire to let potential candidates make their own announcements, stating, "Let’s let them make their announcements, okay? We’re talking about speculation. We don’t know who’s running. We’ll find out soon."
However, when pressed further about supporting Newsom, Pelosi appeared to signal that his presidential bid is inevitable. "When he decides to run, we'll find out what that will be," she said. Pelosi also lauded Newsom's work ethic, noting, "He’s always been responsible." She added that if people decide to run, then "we can make a decision about that."
Newsom has publicly stated that he is still considering whether to run for president. Both Newsom and Harris, who are from the Bay Area, have hinted at potential campaigns in 2028.
Harris has reportedly been taking steps to shore up support, including reaching out to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Newsom, meanwhile, has positioned himself as a critic of former President Donald Trump.
Pelosi made it clear that she would not be directly involved in any presidential campaign, stating, "In terms of being involved in a political presidential campaign, never."
