Mars Petcare US has initiated a voluntary recall for specific lots of Pedigree High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor Wet Dog Food. The recall stems from concerns that the affected cans may contain sharp pieces of metal and plastic, posing a serious risk of injury to dogs.
The company stated that the contaminated cans did not meet their quality standards and should not have reached consumers. The foreign material could cause choking, cuts to a dog's mouth or digestive tract, or dangerous intestinal blockages if ingested. Mars Petcare US has not received any reports of pets becoming ill or injured in connection with this recall.
The affected products are Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2-ounce wet dog food with lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC. No other Pedigree or Mars Petcare products are included in this recall.
Mars is investigating how these specific lots entered the retail supply chain. The company indicated that these lots were sent to a third-party contractor for destruction but were later discovered to have been fraudulently diverted and sold in the United States.
Consumers who purchased the recalled cans are advised not to feed them to their dogs and to contact Pedigree Consumer Care for a replacement. Pet owners whose dogs have consumed the affected food and are exhibiting signs of illness are encouraged to consult their veterinarian. For questions or to arrange a replacement, consumers can contact Pedigree Consumer Care at 1-800-525-5273.
