Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton has faced criticism for his choice of attire while campaigning over the weekend, including a "Four Season Golf Orlando" polo shirt and a watch valued at over $40,000.

Paxton, who is seeking to hold a Texas Senate seat that has not been held by Democrats for over three decades, was seen wearing the luxury golf shirt and a Hublot Aerofusion King gold watch, estimated to be worth $40,000, during campaign events in San Antonio. The Four Seasons Orlando is a resort where rooms can cost thousands of dollars per night.

James Talarico, Paxton's Democratic opponent, commented on the attire, suggesting it underscored a disconnect with the economic struggles of everyday Texans. "Nothing says you understand the affordability crisis like wearing a $41,000 watch and a Four Seasons polo," Talarico stated. Liberal commentator Brian Tyler Cohen also remarked that Paxton "Can’t even pretend to be a man of the people."

Paxton, 63, has a reported net worth between $13 million and $27 million, according to financial disclosures. In contrast, Talarico's net worth is estimated between $15,000 and $50,000.

During an appearance on Fox News, Paxton addressed questions about his net worth and claims that he owns multiple properties. He defended his wealth, attributing it to his success as a practicing attorney and business owner before entering public office. Paxton stated he is "proud" of how he built his wealth, noting his salary as a legislator was $600 a month and his current salary as Texas Attorney General is $153,750 per year. He characterized Talarico as a "DEI consultant" who profited from public funds.

Paxton secured his party's nomination for the Senate race with an endorsement from former President Trump, after defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the primary. However, his campaign has also been marked by allegations of adultery stemming from a divorce and a prior impeachment proceeding, from which he was acquitted by the Texas Senate.

Recent polling indicates a tight race, with one Texas Public Opinion Research poll released on August 27 showing Talarico leading Paxton 48 percent to 42 percent. Concerns have also been raised by some Republicans regarding the financial resources allocated to support Paxton's campaign. Despite these concerns, some Republican advisors believe the seat is not in danger, citing the expected high turnout in Texas, which could benefit Paxton due to the popularity of Governor Greg Abbott, who is seeking a fourth term.
