Pauline Hanson Apologizes for Cartoon Mocking Jacqui Lambie's Medical Condition

Pauline Hanson has apologized for a One Nation cartoon that appeared to mock Senator Jacqui Lambie's vaginal prolapse, just a day after telling Lambie to "get over it" and "lighten up." The One Nation leader stated that the cartoon was published without her prior knowledge of its content and that she has asked for it to be changed.

"The video went up without me actually seeing it, and I was not aware of its content," Senator Hanson told News24 on Tuesday. "I have spoken to the creator of that video and I've asked him to actually change it."

She acknowledged that the depiction was "not as tastefully done as it could have been" and expressed respect for individuals' views. Hanson vowed to review future episodes of the satirical cartoon series, accepting responsibility for its content.

In August, Senator Lambie disclosed her struggle with vaginal and bladder prolapse, a condition requiring surgery and a five-month recovery period. She shared this during an impassioned speech criticizing a proposed cap on returned-service healthcare, stating the condition stemmed from a back injury sustained during her army service.

Lambie previously stated that the cartoon trivialized reproductive health issues faced by women nationwide. "By making this cartoon, One Nation didn't just make light of my own medical struggles, but those of so many other women who have experienced reproductive health issues," she said in a social media statement. She emphasized that her decision to speak about her condition was not for sympathy but to assure other women they were not alone, and that open discussion of such issues should not invite mockery.

The cartoon, published on Hanson's social media accounts, depicted Lambie's character expressing an inability to laugh due to her prolapsed vagina in response to a character suggesting One Nation's cartoon series should be removed. The cartoon was part of a series that also previously targeted Liberal MP Andrew Hastie, branding him a "traitor."

The depiction drew criticism from across the political spectrum. Independent MP Monique Ryan, a medical doctor, condemned the cartoon as a "nasty style of politics." Liberal MP Andrew Hastie described it as a "cheap, nasty and vulgar joke" and warned it exemplified the "MAGA-style politics" expected from One Nation. He also accused Hanson of hypocrisy, referencing her previous anger over a joke about Gina Rinehart.

Minister for Women Katy Gallagher stated, "Making fun of women's health concerns isn't satire. It's bullying." Senator Lambie urged those close to Hanson to intervene and request the cartoon's immediate removal, suggesting that those who find health issues affecting women's reproductive systems "laughable" should stand by Hanson's actions.
