Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer Honor Late Dog Ted on TV
TV stars appeared on The One Show days after Whitehouse was involved in a cashpoint altercation.
Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer, stars of the BBC fishing series "Gone Fishing," paid tribute to the show's beloved late dog, Ted, during an appearance on "The One Show" on Thursday. The television appearance occurred just days after Whitehouse was reportedly attacked at a cashpoint in London.
During their interview, Whitehouse and Mortimer spoke about Ted, who had been a fixture on the series. "We have to talk about this series being the last time that we're going to see lovely Ted," host Alex Jones told the pair. Bob Mortimer responded, "Yeah, so sad. Oh, it's so sad. And of course, he always stole the show, didn't he?"
Whitehouse added, "He was amazing, wasn't he? He was so disinterested. He didn't care about us!"
Mortimer explained that Ted would appear in only one episode of the new series, with a special send-off planned for Christmas. "It's our farewell to Ted, and yeah, he's extraordinary in it. But yeah, we'll really miss him," Whitehouse confirmed.
The pair had previously paid tribute to Ted in April after his passing. The canine had joined the show in 2020 and became a fan favorite. Ted was rescued in 2013 and lived with Lisa Clark, the show's executive producer.
Mortimer described Ted as "the best companion and the greatest little chum," while Whitehouse called him "a species all of his own" and noted he had "gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky."
Whitehouse's appearance on "The One Show" followed an incident on the previous Friday where he was involved in an altercation at a cashpoint in Islington, London. Footage reportedly showed the 68-year-old entertainer being set upon by a stranger. Whitehouse's wife, Dr. Mine Conkbayir, first disclosed the event on Instagram, stating that her husband had been mugged while trying to withdraw medication for her.
However, observations of CCTV footage suggested the incident may have stemmed from a dispute over the cashpoint, with the attacker becoming angry when Whitehouse approached the machine. Rather than a theft, the card was reportedly left at the ATM and thrown towards Whitehouse by the attacker. A shopkeeper described the event as "queue rage" and "disproportionate" violence.
A spokeswoman for Whitehouse confirmed it was a "distressing physical and verbal attack" but offered no further comment. Dr. Conkbayir urged the public to be vigilant when out and about.
"Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing" is set to return for its ninth series on Sunday at 9 p.m.
