Paul Scholes Clashes with Martin Keown Over Manchester City Medals
The former Manchester United midfielder reignited a past dispute, telling Arsenal legend Martin Keown to 'do one' after Scholes reiterated his controversial stance on Manchester City's Premier League winners potentially forfeiting their medals.
Paul Scholes has reignited his feud with Arsenal legend Martin Keown, telling him to "do one" after Scholes doubled down on his view that Manchester City's Premier League winners should be forced to hand over their medals.
Mancity was sanctioned by the Premier League last month for allegedly manipulating their financial accounts, amassing £900 million between 2009 and 2018 through "sham" agreements. During this period, the club secured eight trophies.
Monchester City denies the accusations and is appealing the verdict, which found them guilty of 114 out of 115 charges.
Scholes, a former Manchester United player, had previously posted on Instagram: "Keep hearing ex-teammates say they want trophies taken off them, but they don't want their medals. F*** that, I'm a greedy b******, I want my medal."
Keown, appearing on talkSPORT, expressed his disapproval of Scholes's demand, stating: "How many does he need? He’s got a dozen or so already, but I can’t tell him how to behave or think. For me, I just think it should be void. I think if we’re going to take away Man City’s trophies throughout that period it should be made void."
Simon Jordan, also on talkSPORT, suggested Scholes's comments might be influenced by his media role. "I always thought Paul Scholes was a very balanced individual who made sensible points. Maybe his experience in management at Oldham has corrupted his thinking because all of a sudden he’s got a podcast and he feels that he and Nicky [Butt] have got to say controversial things. I think he’s a bit better than that, really."
Scholes responded to the criticism on Instagram, first commenting "Pot, Kettle, Black, Simon," before directly addressing Keown: "And you can do one with that 'void season' nonsense."
The Premier League's findings detailed that Manchester City engaged in "sham contracts" that misrepresented agreements with commercial partners, thereby artificially inflating club revenues and reducing costs. These practices allegedly concealed the club's true financial state from auditors and regulators.
The league stated that the club filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances. It added that the club was "significantly in breach of both the Premier League's and UEFA's spending limits" during the 2009-2018 period, had accurate accounts been reported, the breaches would have been substantial.
Furthermore, the panel found that Manchester City repeatedly breached its duties of cooperation and good faith by failing to assist the Premier League's investigation, which was initiated after hacked club emails emerged. The league noted that City made "concerted efforts to stop and frustrate the PL investigation."
