Paul Pierce Claims Financial Strain Amid Custody Battle
The NBA legend states he is 'tapped out' after his Fox Sports contract ended, facing significant monthly expenses and legal fees.
Basketball Hall of Famer Paul Pierce has stated he is "tapped out" financially, with his last paycheck from Fox Sports arriving in August, as he navigates a custody dispute with his ex-wife, Princess Santiago. Court documents obtained by TMZ reveal Pierce's financial concerns amid ongoing legal proceedings.
Pierce, who earned over $195 million in salary during his 19-season NBA career, is reportedly paying approximately $28,000 per month in child support and an additional $20,000 in spousal support to Santiago. Their son, King Rafael, was born in February.
According to court documents, Pierce's monthly expenses total around $48,000, which includes $8,000 for childcare, $5,000 for groceries, $7,000 for dining out, $3,200 for utilities, $1,000 for clothing, and $3,500 for entertainment.
Pierce's attorney argued that the former NBA star, who claims to have $300,000 in the bank and $3 million in property, would face "great difficulty" paying Santiago's requested legal fees of $40,000 and an additional $10,000 for a forensic accountant. His average monthly income from Fox Sports was reportedly $119,000, though he stated he earned about $23,000 in September from other business ventures.
The legal battle intensified earlier this year when Santiago filed a paternity suit in January. She provided text messages alleging Pierce ignored her during her pregnancy and prioritized other interests over their son. Santiago sought sole legal and physical custody and child support payments.
Previously, Pierce opposed Santiago's request for $30,000 per month in child support and $100,000 for legal fees. Pierce's final broadcast on FS1 followed his dismissal from ESPN in 2021, reportedly due to social media conduct.
Picturing Pierce during his NBA career, he played 15 of his 19 seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning a championship and Finals MVP in 2008. His jersey number 34 was retired by the Celtics in 2018.
