Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a hit-and-run charge following an incident in Napa County on Friday evening, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators said an eyewitness reported seeing a driver in a convertible strike an empty parked car around 2:30 p.m. The witness then reported that the convertible's driver briefly stopped before driving away. The sheriff's office located the convertible a short distance away, blocking a road. The driver was identified by his license as Paul Pelosi.
Pelosi, 86, allegedly told investigators that he hit something but did not know what, and continued driving until his vehicle became disabled. An alcohol screening device detected no alcohol on Pelosi, and he was not arrested at the scene.
The sheriff's office stated it would be referring the case to the Napa District Attorney's Office. A California DMV re-evaluation referral form will also be submitted, which the sheriff's office described as common for elderly drivers.
Attorneys for Paul Pelosi were not immediately available for comment. Neither he nor Rep. Nancy Pelosi have commented on the incident.
In October 2022, Paul Pelosi was the victim of a home invasion in San Francisco. A man broke into the couple's home while he was asleep and attacked him with a hammer, resulting in a fractured skull and requiring surgery. The assailant, David Wayne DePape, was convicted in 2023 on federal charges of assault and attempted kidnapping and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He also received a life sentence after being convicted on five state charges a year later.
