Paul Mescal Films Iconic Beatles Meeting for Biopic Series

Paul Mescal has been spotted on set filming a pivotal moment in music history for an upcoming Beatles biopic series: the day a 16-year-old Paul McCartney first met John Lennon. The scene, depicting the encounter at a church fair in Liverpool, is being recreated for the project, which is currently in production.

Mescal, cast as McCartney, was seen on location dressed in a blue shirt, grey jacket, and navy trousers. The historic meeting occurred on July 6, 1957, at a garden fete held at St Peter's Church in Woolton. Lennon, then performing with his skiffle group The Quarrymen, was introduced to McCartney by a mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan. McCartney reportedly impressed Lennon by tuning a guitar and performing Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock."

While John Lennon is being portrayed by Harris Dickinson, he was not present on the set during Mescal's filming. The set design included women in period attire with dresses and bonnets, and bunting adorning the garden. Vintage cars were visible on the road outside the venue, with red, white, and blue bunting also displayed.

The Beatles biopic series is planned as four installments, each focusing on one member of the band, with simultaneous releases scheduled for the following year. Barry Keoghan is set to play Ringo Starr and Joseph Quinn will portray George Harrison.

Earlier this past month, the cast was seen recreating the iconic Abbey Road album cover. The 1969 photograph, taken by Iain Macmillan, features the four Beatles walking across the zebra crossing outside EMI Studios in North London. The director, Sam Mendes, had initially faced challenges in securing permission to film at the location from Westminster council, but it was later confirmed that filming would proceed in coordination with production teams.

Also present on set was a replica of John Lennon's distinctive psychedelic Rolls-Royce Phantom V. Originally black, Lennon had the car repainted in a vibrant yellow in 1967, adorned with elaborate Romani-inspired designs. Daniel Hoffmann-Gill was seen on set as Mal Evans, the Beatles' long-time road manager and former Cavern Club bouncer, who played an essential role in the band's tours and recording sessions.

Abbey Road was released as the Beatles' penultimate album, though their final album, Let It Be, was largely recorded prior to its completion.
