Paul Merson Questions Arteta's Midfield Selection in Brighton Defeat

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has questioned manager Mikel Arteta's decision to start Bruno Guimaraes in the recent 3-0 defeat against Brighton, suggesting that Myles Lewis-Skelly might have been a more suitable choice. Merson, writing in his Sky Sports column, expressed bewilderment at Arteta's tactical choices for the match on the south coast.

"I don’t know if he thought it would be a nice football match, that Brighton would be tired after coming from 2-0 down against Manchester United on Wednesday?" Merson stated. He observed that Arsenal struggled significantly in the game, being "outrun, overpowered in midfield, and ripped to shreds."

Merson acknowledged Guimaraes's quality as a footballer, particularly in possession-based scenarios. "Bruno’s a good footballer. If you’re playing a low block, I don’t see the problem in playing him. When you’re going to dominate the ball, there’s no-one like him when you have time. He’s a good player and passer – and he’s very intelligent," he commented.

However, Merson contrasted this with Guimaraes's performance in the Brighton match, suggesting it was not the optimal setting for his skillset. He recalled Guimaraes's standout performance as a substitute against Aston Villa a few weeks prior, where he effectively controlled the tempo of the game and facilitated play. "He could just keep the ball, pop it around, play one-twos and play the game at his tempo. That would have been a better idea," Merson argued.

Merson was careful not to place sole blame on Guimaraes for the loss. "I’m not blaming Bruno for Arsenal losing, absolutely not. I just didn’t know why Arteta had to change the team in a very difficult game," he concluded.

The defeat to Brighton saw Arsenal slip to second in the league table, three points behind Manchester City, who secured the top spot after their victory over Sunderland.
