Paul Finebaum Criticizes Steve Sarkisian's Handling of Arch Manning
College football analyst Paul Finebaum blames Texas coach Steve Sarkisian for Arch Manning's struggles, calling the situation 'embarrassing.'
College football analyst Paul Finebaum has voiced strong criticism of Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, attributing the perceived struggles of quarterback Arch Manning to Sarkisian's coaching. Finebaum described the situation surrounding Manning as "embarrassing" and suggested that the young quarterback might regret his decision to play for Sarkisian.
Finebaum's comments come as Manning, a highly touted prospect, has faced increased scrutiny following two consecutive losses for the Texas Longhorns. The team, which plummeted from No. 1 to No. 19 in the AP Poll, lost to unranked SEC opponents Oklahoma and Florida. During these games, Manning threw multiple interceptions, including turnovers on the final drive in both contests.
The pressure on Manning and the Texas program intensified this week with reports that backup quarterback K.J. Lacey Jr. would receive more first-team reps in practice. While Manning is slated to start against No. 7 Ole Miss, this decision has cast doubt on his long-term position as the starter.
Finebaum expressed his concerns on "The Matt Barrie Show," stating, "I blame Sarkisian for every aspect of this." He added, "It's terrible. It's embarrassing what you've done to Arch Manning. And I wonder if he's going to regret the day that he went to play for Steve Sarkisian." He further asserted that Sarkisian has made an "absolute mess out of the most talented team in the country."
Sarkisian, while publicly supporting his second-year starter, has acknowledged that Manning needs to improve. "I think there's no doubt about it: Arch can play better for us," Sarkisian said. "He's our starter, but I need to see a better version of Arch Manning."
In six games this season, Manning has completed 1,295 passing yards for 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has exceeded 300 passing yards in only one game, the season opener against Texas State. The performance of Manning, the nephew of NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, is being closely watched, as his draft position in 2027 could be impacted by his continued play this season.
