Paul Bettany Suffers Eye Injury While Filming Marvel's 'VisionQuest'
The actor recounted an incident where he blew out blood vessels during an intense scene.
Paul Bettany, known for his role as Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, experienced a significant eye injury during the filming of the Disney+ series "VisionQuest." The actor revealed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" that he ruptured approximately 10 blood vessels in his eye due to what he described as "wildly overacting" during a scene where his character was reacting to a device affecting his brain.
Bettany, who also voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. before portraying Vision, admitted that the incident was a "lesson in less is more." The injury persisted for two weeks, reportedly necessitating digital alterations to the footage shot during that period. Despite the discomfort, Bettany noted the logistical challenges of halting production, suggesting it would have been costly to reschedule.
Ironically, Bettany commented on the contrast between his character's enhanced abilities and his own vision. "The irony is the actor playing Vision is kind of myopic, you know. I can't see a thing when I take my glasses off," he joked. He also shared insights into the plot of "VisionQuest," explaining that his character, having had his memories restored but struggling with emotional connections, lives a quiet life in Scotland. At night, Vision retreats into a "mind space" within his own consciousness, depicted as a mansion populated by AI entities that help him process information and understand humanity.
"VisionQuest" marks the conclusion of a television trilogy that began with "WandaVision" in 2021 and was followed by "Agatha All Along" in 2024. In the series, Bettany's Vision grapples with his identity and search for purpose after being rebuilt.
