The NFL's 2026 season opener between the Patriots and Seahawks drew an average of 25.1 million viewers, marking a 12 percent decrease from the previous year's game and the lowest viewership for a regular-season opener since 2022.
Despite the overall dip, the game saw a surge in the coveted 18-49 demographic, reaching a five-year high for a season opener in that age group. The NFL continues to draw over 25 million viewers for its first game of the season for the fourth consecutive year, underscoring its position as a dominant force in American entertainment.
This season's opener also coincides with a change in Nielsen's audience measurement methodology. The ratings agency has implemented a hybrid approach, incorporating data from electronic devices alongside traditional household panels. This shift has raised concerns within the NFL, with league officials expressing uncertainty about its potential impact on viewership figures.
Paul Ballew, NFL head of data and analytics, stated that the league is still analyzing the effects of Nielsen's new methodology. "We don't have enough impact data to fully assess," Ballew said, adding that initial observations suggest a negative impact on sports ratings, though co-viewing data presents a positive aspect. He emphasized the league's priority on accurate measurement and its pursuit of ongoing improvements in the field.
Ballew described Nielsen's move as a "misstep" and stated it accelerates the pressure on the league to ensure measurement accuracy, which is crucial for the industry. "Media measurement matters a lot to us," he commented.
