Patriots Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Out Multiple Weeks With High Ankle Sprain

New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a high ankle sprain during the team's recent victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury, which occurred on Sunday, does not require surgery.

Henderson reinjured the same ankle he initially hurt during training camp. He finished Sunday's game with four carries for 22 yards before his departure. This latest setback leaves Rhamondre Stevenson as the primary ball carrier, with limited depth behind him on the roster. The Patriots may explore the free-agent market or practice squad for additional running back support, as Corey Ciner is the only other healthy player at the position.

As a rookie last season, Henderson made a significant impact, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, a figure that placed him among the top running backs in the league. However, his second year has been hampered by injuries. He missed the season opener due to the initial ankle injury sustained in August. Currently, Henderson is averaging 3.9 yards per carry this season. Stevenson, while also experiencing a less productive year with 4.0 yards per carry, has maintained a role in the passing game and serves as the primary pass blocker for the Patriots.

The injury news comes as wide receiver AJ Brown is nearing a return to the field. Brown has been sidelined since sustaining his own ankle injury in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. However, his potential return could provide a boost to the Patriots' offense, which has also seen limited production from free-agent signee Romeo Doubs. Doubs, who has been the team's No. 1 receiver, recorded only one catch for 16 yards on three targets in the last game.

The Patriots are preparing to face the New York Jets this week, following their recent wins against the Bills and Raiders.
