The New England Patriots' season began with a 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a Super Bowl rematch that highlighted significant challenges for the team. The defeat was compounded by a right ankle injury to wide receiver A.J. Brown and a performance by quarterback Drake Maye that included three interceptions.

Brown, acquired in the offseason for a fresh start and reunion with coach Mike Vrabel, will undergo further evaluation to determine his availability for the Patriots' home opener against Pittsburgh on September 20. "I don’t know if he’ll be available going forward here for the next week. But we’ll see," Vrabel stated.

The early adversity comes as the Patriots face a challenging schedule against opponents who made the playoffs last season. Vrabel identified "the good, the bad and the stuff that gets us beat" as key categories his team needs to address, noting that the season opener contained elements of all three.

Beyond Brown's injury, Maye's struggles with decision-making and errant throws in critical moments emerged as a primary concern. These issues mirror those that hampered him in the previous Super Bowl loss to Seattle. Maye emphasized the importance of leadership and team unity, urging his teammates not to overreact to the single loss.

"You’ve got to stick together and that starts with me getting back to work and having the right intention in practice," Maye said. "These guys are here for me. I think they’ve done a great job in supporting me and have had my back. I’ve got to earn their trust."

The offensive line showed improvement, with all five starters playing every snap. This marks a positive step following offseason adjustments, including the departure of center Garrett Bradbury and the addition of Alijah Vera-Tucker. "I felt like we did protect better. And I thought there were a lot of strides in that regard," Vrabel commented. "Not perfect, but I thought that we were able to at least create some pockets and that to give us a chance to throw from."

Despite the offensive line's progress, the running game struggled, amassing 109 yards on 31 attempts. Rhamondre Stevenson led the team with 51 yards. Rookie tight end Eli Raridon scored the Patriots' only touchdown, a two-yard reception from Maye. This performance offers a potential positive outlook for the tight end position, a key area for the Patriots' offense.

Wide receiver Romeo Doubs, a significant free-agent acquisition, had a difficult outing. With the Patriots leading early in the fourth quarter, a deep pass intended for Doubs was deflected and intercepted, leading to a Seahawks touchdown. Later, Doubs dropped a potentially crucial pass, contributing to a situation that resulted in another interception and a go-ahead field goal for Seattle. "I just wasn’t locked in. That’s all. I mean, the video speaks for itself," Doubs acknowledged. "I’ll be better moving forward."

The Patriots will have three days to prepare for their home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 20.
