The New England Patriots have extended tight end Hunter Henry's contract for two years, with the deal potentially worth up to $20 million. The agreement was finalized on Monday morning and will keep the veteran player with the team through the 2028 season, according to reports.
The extension includes $14.5 million in guaranteed money and a $4.2 million signing bonus. Henry was entering the final year of his previous contract before agreeing to terms on the new deal.
Key Contributions and Future Outlook
Henry, 31, was a significant offensive contributor during the Patriots' 2025 campaign, which concluded with an appearance in the Super Bowl. He set a career high last season with 768 receiving yards, catching 60 passes for seven touchdowns in 17 regular-season games. He also added a touchdown during the team's playoff run, serving as a reliable target for quarterback Drake Maye. With the departure of Stefon Diggs, Henry's role is expected to become even more critical as the Patriots aim to compete for a Super Bowl title.
Since joining the Patriots in 2021, Henry has accumulated 2,973 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns. His performance places him among the franchise's most productive tight ends, alongside notable players like Rob Gronkowski and Ben Coates.
Playing Surface Concerns
Separately, the Patriots are addressing issues with Gillette Stadium's playing surface. Following the FIFA World Cup, the stadium temporarily switched to natural grass, but has since re-installed artificial turf. However, NFL and NFL Players Association independent laboratory testing has deemed the current turf surface "noncompliant." The team's chief operating officer, Jim Nolan, confirmed that a replacement field will be installed this week. This situation could impact the team's preparation for their upcoming preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, scheduled for next Thursday.
