Patrick Vieira Held Secret Talks with Sir Alex Ferguson About Manchester United Move

Patrick Vieira has disclosed that he held secret discussions with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson regarding a potential transfer to Old Trafford. During these talks, Ferguson outlined a vision for a midfield comprising Vieira alongside his fiercest on-field rival, Roy Keane.

Vieira, who played for Arsenal from 1996 to 2005, was a central figure in the intense rivalry between Arsenal and Manchester United during that era. His clashes with Manchester United captain Keane were particularly memorable, including a notable confrontation in the tunnel at Highbury in February 2005.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Vieira admitted that a move to Manchester United was a possibility. He stated that he met with Ferguson, whom he respected greatly and could not refuse a meeting with due to his stature in the Premier League. Ferguson's proposed Manchester United lineup included Vieira and Keane in midfield, with Ryan Giggs on the left, David Beckham on the right, and Paul Scholes playing behind striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Despite the compelling offer, Vieira ultimately decided to remain with Arsenal. He explained that he felt too happy at the club and believed they were on the verge of achieving something special. The affection from the club, his teammates, and the fans played a significant role in his decision to stay and continue his development as a player.

While Vieira did not specify the exact date of the meeting, reports from the summer of 2003 suggested Manchester United's interest in the then-Arsenal captain, who had one year remaining on his contract. At the time, Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein publicly stated that Vieira was not for sale.

Vieira went on to captain Arsenal that season, leading the team to an undefeated Premier League title victory as part of the 'Invincibles'. This was his third league title with the Gunners before his departure in 2005 for Juventus. He later played for Inter Milan and finished his career at Manchester City.

Vieira had previously acknowledged Ferguson's interest as a compliment in the 2013 documentary 'Keane and Vieira: Best of Enemies.' The documentary also delved into the notorious tunnel incident in 2005, where Vieira admitted to initiating the confrontation with Gary Neville, which escalated into a heated exchange with Keane.

Vieira and Keane have since appeared together as pundits, working on major tournament coverage for ITV and Sky Sports.
