Patrick Stewart's Final Artistic Endeavors Showcased in Pre-Death Instagram Posts
The renowned actor released an audio collection of Shakespeare's sonnets and shared recitations online in the months leading up to his passing.
Sir Patrick Stewart, celebrated for his iconic roles in "Star Trek" and "X-Men," demonstrated his enduring passion for Shakespeare through a series of Instagram videos shared in the months preceding his death at age 86. These posts, which highlighted his profound connection to the Bard, came nearly two years after his final public appearance.
Stewart, who joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and performed in numerous Shakespearean productions throughout his career, announced in April the release of an audio collection titled “Patrick Stewart Performs the Complete Sonnets of William Shakespeare.” This project was inspired by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and followed the success of his “Sonnet-A-Day” social media series during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To commemorate Shakespeare's birthday later that month, Stewart shared a video from his home, reciting lines from Sonnet 116, which he described as his "most favorite sonnet." He encouraged his followers to appreciate the sonnet, playfully noting, "I’ve converted a few of my friends to its cause, and I’m hoping you’re next. Cheers!"
In May, Stewart returned to Instagram to mark the anniversary of the sonnets' 1609 publication. He shared his hopes that listeners would find meaning in his audio collection, stating, “I hope it has brought pleasure and curiosity, but more than anything else, I want it to have communicated all the multiple features that love might have.”
These final public displays of his artistic talents occurred nearly two years after his last known public appearance. In June 2024, Stewart was photographed on the red carpet at the 84th annual Peabody Awards, held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Los Angeles.
