Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes offered a playful jab at his teammate Travis Kelce regarding his age during a recent GQ interview, just as Kelce and Taylor Swift were set to celebrate their upcoming wedding in New York.
Swift and Kelce held an intimate rehearsal dinner at Madison Square Garden on Thursday evening, followed by a larger celebration on Friday with approximately 1,000 guests at the iconic Manhattan venue. Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, have developed a close friendship with Kelce and Swift.
When asked in the GQ interview which of his Chiefs teammates he would most want to go on vacation with, Mahomes, 30, jokingly bypassed the 36-year-old Kelce. "Obviously, the easy answer is Travis," Mahomes was quoted as saying. "But now that he’s getting a little older, I'm going to go with one of the young guys."
Mahomes instead named rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, citing his speed and golf abilities. "Xavier Worthy, he’s always having a good time. He golfs now, and I golf a lot. And my kids love seeing him because he’s fast - they like watching him play," Mahomes explained.
This lighthearted banter mirrors past interactions between the two players, who have a history of playfully teasing each other. Kelce, for instance, has been known to imitate Mahomes's voice, comparing it to Kermit the Frog.
Mahomes and Kelce are not only teammates but also business partners, co-owning the Kansas City steakhouse 1587, named after their respective jersey numbers. Their friendship has also extended to joint vacations, including a trip to Amsterdam in July 2024 to attend one of Swift's Eras Tour concerts.
In the same interview, Mahomes also humorously noted that Swift's music hasn't been a primary listen for him lately, preferring recent Drake albums during the NFL offseason. Mahomes has been focused on his recovery after tearing his ACL in mid-December. The Chiefs missed the playoffs following that challenging campaign, a season that had raised speculation about Kelce's potential retirement. However, Kelce ultimately signed on for another season alongside Mahomes, who is working towards being healthy for Week 1 of the upcoming season against the Denver Broncos.
