Patrick Herbert to Make NFL Debut Alongside Brother Justin Amidst Chargers Injuries

The Los Angeles Chargers have added another Herbert to their active roster, promoting tight end Patrick Herbert from the practice squad for his NFL debut on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. His promotion comes as the Chargers face a significant number of injuries at the tight end position.

Injury Woes Prompt Roster Move

The Chargers have been hit hard by injuries to their tight end corps. David Njoku was placed on injured reserve with a fibula injury, and Charlie Kolar sustained a left forearm injury in the previous week. Although Kolar was not placed on injured reserve, he will not be active for Sunday's game.

Prior to Patrick Herbert's elevation, Oronde Gadsden II was the team's only healthy tight end. The Chargers also signed Hayden Rucci from the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad earlier in the week. Patrick Herbert's addition brings the total active tight ends for the Chargers to three.

Family Ties and NFL Journey

Patrick Herbert signed with the Chargers' practice squad this month after spending the preseason with the Jaguars. He was with Jacksonville last year for his rookie season but did not play in a game. Both Patrick and his brother, Justin, played college football at the University of Oregon. They were teammates during the 2019 season, though Patrick, a freshman, saw limited playing time.

Justin Herbert, the Chargers' starting quarterback, has never connected with his brother on a pass in a competitive game since their high school days. A pass completion between the brothers on Sunday would mark a significant family milestone.
