Pat McAfee's ESPN 'Monday Night Football' Alt-Cast Draws Underwhelming Viewership
McAfee's alternative broadcast for Commanders-49ers game was outdrawn by NFL Network's offering and significantly trails performance of ManningCast in prior seasons.
Pat McAfee's inaugural "Monday Night Football" alternate broadcast on ESPN2, dubbed "Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show," garnered 351,000 viewers for the Week 6 game between the Commanders and 49ers. This figure was surpassed by NFL Network's "Next Gen Stats" broadcast, which attracted 469,000 viewers.
ESPN has enlisted McAfee to host these alternative telecasts when the popular "ManningCast," featuring Peyton and Eli Manning, is not airing. The "ManningCast" has historically drawn larger audiences, with over 700,000 viewers for its Week 1 broadcast this season and averaging over a million viewers in its inaugural year in 2021.
The primary broadcast of the Commanders-49ers "Monday Night Football" game achieved a total viewership of 17.9 million across all ESPN platforms, including ABC, ESPN2, NFL Network, ESPN Deportes, and NFL+.
McAfee is scheduled to host five more "MNF" alternate broadcasts this season, with the next one slated for Week 9 between the Bills and Vikings. His "Field Pass" program will also compete against the "Next Gen Stats" alt-cast during Super Bowl 2027.
The Mannings are set to cover 12 games this season, in addition to Super Bowl 2027.
McAfee's expanded role with ESPN, which includes his daily talk show and "Monday Night Countdown" appearances, is part of a significant contract that reportedly ranges from $60 million to $65 million annually. Prior to his "MNF" appearances, McAfee hosted alternate broadcasts for numerous college football games, with one notable broadcast for the Ohio State-Oregon game in 2025 drawing 2.4 million viewers.
ESPN has also announced plans for a "Star Wars" animated alternate broadcast for Super Bowl 2027, which will air on February 14.
