David Vander Meer, a pastor and youth counselor, was arrested last month and charged with the murder of his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, who died in 2006 after falling from Angels Landing in Zion National Park, Utah. He died by suicide in his jail cell just days after his arrest.

Bernadette Vander Meer died in August 2006 while celebrating her 10th anniversary with her husband. For nearly 20 years, her death was officially considered a tragic accident. However, a recent analysis by The Crime Desk newsletter suggests law enforcement oversights may have allowed David Vander Meer to avoid scrutiny.

Friends and family members had long harbored suspicions about David Vander Meer's involvement in his wife's death, though they lacked proof. Kristina Riccio, a friend, stated, "We couldn't prove it, of course. But we were all convinced."

At the time of his arrest, David Vander Meer also faced separate accusations of grooming girls. His death in jail has brought a swift end to the legal proceedings related to Bernadette's death.
