Charlie Kirk was remembered by his pastor Thursday as a “hero” whose faith animated his public work after the conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA was fatally shot while speaking at a university event in Utah on Wednesday.

Pastor David Engelhardt, who called Kirk a friend and disciple, praised Kirk’s willingness to speak openly about his Christian beliefs and credited him with encouraging religious leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Charlie was a man of incredible strength," Engelhardt said. "He wasn't shy about his faith. He wasn't avoidant, afraid that it would offend people. That's why he's a hero, because he was courageous... he was a sacrificer, he was a leader, and he stood for truth." Engelhardt said the two first met in 2020 when Kirk challenged him to reopen his church, a move Engelhardt said made his congregation among the first in New York to resume services and inspired other pastors.

Kirk, a prominent youth activist and social media influencer who helped build Turning Point USA into a national force on college campuses, was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem when the shooting occurred, authorities and news reports said. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes and messages of sympathy from supporters and political figures.

Law enforcement released images Thursday afternoon of a person of interest in the shooting and said the individual remained at large. Officials have not publicly identified a suspect or released additional details about a motive.

Kirk’s supporters and associates said his advocacy combined evangelism and conservative politics, and they credited him with mobilizing young people through campus outreach and media efforts. Engelhardt said Kirk’s work produced "such a beautiful fruit of Turning Point USA and the hundreds of thousands of young people that have been so deeply impacted by it."

Mourners have left tributes in multiple locations. A wreath placed outside the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria was among the memorials photographed on Thursday, reflecting international attention to the killing and Kirk’s global profile as a conservative organizer.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing. Local and federal authorities have not announced charges. Officials urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement.

Kirk’s death has intensified debate within U.S. politics over campus activism, political rhetoric and safety at public events. For those who knew him personally, the focus remained on his faith and his role mentoring young activists. Engelhardt said Kirk "wasn't demeaning to other people about their position," and described him as a figure who combined conviction with personal outreach.

Authorities and Kirk’s associates have said more information will be released as the investigation proceeds and as family members receive notifications. In the meantime, public tributes and calls for answers continued across social media and at memorials organized by supporters and allies.
