Justin Buzzard, a 47-year-old pastor and father of college sophomores, made his debut for the San Jose City College football team on Saturday. Buzzard, who will turn 48 this year, played two snaps at defensive end in the team's 3C2A-level game against the College of the Redwoods. The team lost the game 41-21.
Buzzard is believed to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, active college football players in the country. He is listed as a freshman on the roster and is closer in age to the team's head coach, Jim Winkler, than to most of his teammates. Winkler stated that on the field, Buzzard is treated as just another player, though he acknowledges Buzzard leads the team in prayer.
His weekend schedule includes watching his two youngest sons play high school football on Friday nights, playing in his own game on Saturday mornings, and delivering a sermon on Sunday. His wife of 23 years, Taylor, noted that this endeavor is entirely in line with Buzzard's personality, as he consistently challenges himself and pushes boundaries.
What began as a personal pursuit has gained national attention, with Buzzard participating in interviews with various media outlets. According to SJCC President Marilyn Flores, Buzzard's unique story has also generated increased interest in the school among current students.
Buzzard's prior football experience extended to Division III Whitworth University, but an injury halted his playing career. He has maintained his physical fitness through running, weightlifting, and Krav Maga. Coaches and teammates have noted his strength and dedication, particularly in the weight room, with punter Preston Conrad mentioning Buzzard's impressive squat depth.
During the game, Buzzard entered with 5:21 remaining on the clock, with his team trailing significantly. On his second snap, he pushed a blocker back, contributing to a sack by a linebacker. His teammates celebrated the play as one of the few highlights for the team that day. Buzzard also made contact with the quarterback after the sack.
Prior to each season, Winkler designates a player to lead the team in prayer, a role Buzzard now naturally fulfills.
