A video circulating online has ignited a debate about hygiene standards on cruise ships after a passenger was observed using a restaurant fork to scratch her foot in a dining area.
The incident, which took place on a Carnival Cruise Line vessel, was documented by another passenger and shared on Instagram. The footage shows the woman scratching dry, scaly patches on her foot with the fork before, in one instance, appearing to use the same utensil to eat pizza.
The cruise blog CruiseHive identified the ship as the Carnival Sunrise, previously known as Carnival Triumph, though the cruise line has not confirmed the vessel.
Carnival Cruise Line addressed the incident on social media on July 22, stating, "We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care." The company confirmed that its crew intervened after becoming aware of the situation and removed the utensil from service. "While the video may be generating laughs and gasps online, cleanliness and hygiene are no joke to us," Carnival stated. "Our crew works hard every day to maintain high standards across our fleet and to ensure all guests enjoy a safe, clean, and comfortable vacation."
The video clips garnered significant attention online, with thousands of comments on Instagram and discussions on platforms like Reddit. Many users expressed disgust and concern over the passenger's actions and the potential implications for onboard cleanliness.
"In the buffet dining area no less, people never stop surprising me," one Reddit user commented. Another stated, "I mean, it’s just nasty no matter where she is at. I just don’t understand people."
Despite the controversy, the cruise industry has seen a strong recovery in passenger numbers. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) projected that over 38 million people would embark on ocean cruises worldwide in the current year, an increase from the 37.2 million passengers in the previous year, according to The Associated Press.
