An American Airlines flight was forced to divert to Baltimore after a passenger, identified as Arthur Lundeen, 67, of Arizona, allegedly engaged in an alcohol-fueled racist and homophobic tirade. The incident occurred on Flight 618 from Dallas, Texas, to Newark, New Jersey.
According to reports, Lundeen, who passengers described as appearing drunk, began yelling approximately 75 percent through the journey. A flight attendant approached the situation, at which point Lundeen allegedly used racial slurs and made homophobic remarks. When a female passenger attempted to intervene, Lundeen reportedly pushed her, prompting three male passengers to step in.
Lundeen then allegedly bit one of the male passengers and attempted to bite another. Flight attendants provided duct tape, and passengers reportedly used it to restrain Lundeen to his seat, wrapping the tape around his wrists, head, and body. He allegedly attempted to free himself from the restraints while passengers held him down.
The flight landed in Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshal Airport about 15 minutes after the incident began. Lundeen was taken into custody, and federal charges are expected. He also reportedly struck his seatmate and damaged his computer.
An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed the flight diverted due to a "disruptive customer." The airline stated that the safety and security of its customers and team members is a top priority and that it does not tolerate violence. The flight continued to Newark after Lundeen was removed from the aircraft.
