Parsons: Daniels' Late-Game Blunder May Have Cost Commanders Coach Job
Dallas Cowboys' Micah Parsons suggested Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' inability to manage the clock in a crucial moment led to potential job losses for Washington's coaching staff.
Micah Parsons, a player for the Dallas Cowboys, has stated that quarterback Jayden Daniels' critical error in the final moments of the Washington Commanders' game against the New York Giants likely cost Head Coach Dan Quinn his position. The Commanders are currently 1-3-1 after an inexplicable sequence in overtime that led to a tie against the Giants.
During overtime, the Commanders offense reached field-goal range with a chance to win the game. However, after a short run on first down, the team failed to stop the clock. Daniels then snapped the ball with approximately 12 seconds remaining, was tackled, and did not spike the ball or throw it out of bounds. This resulted in the clock expiring before the Commanders could attempt a game-winning field goal. Quinn, visibly frustrated, later took responsibility for the offensive play-calling.
Parsons, who previously worked with Quinn on the Cowboys, expressed disbelief at Daniels' decision-making, especially given his experience. "Jayden Daniels probably cost my man Dan Quinn his job, to be honest with you," Parsons said, according to The Athletic. "All respectfully, we get coached so much on these situations that, like, I'm a defensive player, and this s***'s programmed to me. I even know what to do in those situations. There's no way I'm taking a sack with 14 seconds left and no timeouts."
Parsons highlighted that Daniels is in his third year and has experience in significant games, including an NFC Championship appearance, making the late-game gaffe more perplexing. "Mind you, it'd be different if Jayden Daniels was a rookie. This is your third year. This is your third year. You've been to the NFC Championship game. You've been in big moments before. And to me, like even after a sack, you're casually getting up," Parsons added.
While both teams had opportunities to manage the clock for a field goal attempt, the Commanders' inability to execute in the final seconds has drawn significant criticism and intensified scrutiny on the coaching staff.
