Parisian Woman Who Confronted Looters Identified as Actress

A 24-year-old actress and drama student has been identified as the woman who confronted rioters in Paris, with footage of her bravery going viral online. Emma Kunstlich was reportedly horrified when individuals wearing balaclavas began smashing shop windows and looting a convenience store near Place de la Republique.

In the widely shared clip, Kunstlich is seen attempting to block the door to the shop as youths ransacked shelves. She is eventually pushed aside by the looters, crying out, "Stop, stop why are you doing this? This is not the cause!" She also pleaded, "Hey, don't touch me! Stop. What's the point of doing this? There's a man inside, by himself! Look! Stop this!"

Kunstlich told French newspaper Le Monde that the individuals "don't even have a political message. They're just breaking things and stealing, without grasping the consequences of their actions." She added a warning that "if the RN [far-right National Rally] comes to power, we're all going to be in deep s**t!"

Her identity was confirmed by Le Monde amid global speculation on social media, which included unverified claims that she was a boutique owner or an advocate for migrants. The clip gained traction among those who sympathized with anti-government protests but condemned the looting and vandalism that had occurred in Paris and other French cities.

The incidents took place amid widespread unrest that began following a protest in a high school in Creteil, southeast of Paris, over staffing shortages. These demonstrations evolved into broader protests concerning the rising cost of living, occurring months before the next presidential election.

In response to the violence, French authorities implemented a strong security response, including night curfews in some areas of Paris and other cities. Bans on demonstrations were issued in multiple French cities, though a ban in Paris was overturned by an administrative court. President Emmanuel Macron stated that such measures were intended to protect city centers, businesses, and public buildings, and that prefects would consider alternative routes for authorized protests.

Despite government efforts, planned protests, including a large demonstration anticipated on Saturday involving the 'yellow vest' movement and the CGT labor union, were expected to proceed, with authorities planning a significant security operation to prevent further violence. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu met with union representatives, but discussions did not yield concrete proposals. Unions are now focusing on a planned day of action on November 5.
