Paris Protests Force Postponement of PSG vs. Lyon Match
The French capital is bracing for significant demonstrations, leading authorities to reschedule the top-tier football fixture.
Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 match against Lyon has been rescheduled for Monday, October 26, as the French capital prepares for a weekend of anticipated protests. The fixture, originally set for Sunday evening at the Parc des Princes, will now kick off at 8:30 PM local time.
The decision to postpone was announced by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) on Friday, following a directive from French police who prohibited the game from proceeding on its original date. Authorities are anticipating a substantial security operation in response to planned demonstrations across Paris.
Last Saturday, approximately 550,000 people participated in nationwide protests addressing concerns over rising fuel prices, educational standards, and the overall cost of living. These demonstrations, which involved unions and student groups, occurred in several major French cities and were accompanied by isolated incidents of violence, looting, and property destruction.
The security challenge for this weekend is further compounded by the NFL's international series game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints, scheduled to take place at the Stade de France. This event is expected to require a significant police presence, adding to the logistical complexities for law enforcement.
The disruptions have already impacted France's domestic football calendar, with Toulouse's home game against Troyes being moved from Saturday to Sunday at the request of authorities.
Paris Saint-Germain currently sits second in the Ligue 1 standings, while Lyon leads the table on goal difference. The rescheduled match is also notable as it will be played on the same day as the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, an event that includes PSG players Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia among the nominees.
