Parents' Sentences Increased in Infant Son's Murder Case

A United Kingdom couple whose 13-week-old son died from a campaign of abuse has had their life sentence minimum terms increased by senior judges who ruled the original sentences were 'unduly lenient'.

Miguel Pirjani died in November 2024, having suffered 41 broken bones and a brain bleed in what was described as systematic abuse by his parents. His father, Klevi Pirjani, 37, and mother, Nivalda Pirjani, 34, were convicted of murder in October last year and sentenced in March.

Klevi Pirjani was initially given a minimum sentence of 19 years, while Nivalda Pirjani received a minimum of 15 years and three months. These terms were referred to the Court of Appeal by Attorney General Ellie Reeves as being too lenient.

Three senior judges agreed with the referral, stating that the original sentences "significantly underestimated the aggravating factors." They increased Klevi Pirjani's minimum term to 21 years and six months, and Nivalda Pirjani's to 17 years and nine months.

Lord Justice Jeremy Baker noted that the pair subjected their son to "routine" assaults that escalated in severity, culminating in his "particularly callous" murder. The judges ruled that the initial sentences did not adequately reflect the severity of the crimes.

During the original sentencing, the judge stated that the parents were "in this together, encouraging each other" to attack their "defenceless" son. He described the fatal assault as a "heavy blow, or series of blows, to the right side of his head," but the exact perpetrator of the fatal blow remains unclear.

Klevi Pirjani called emergency services on November 24, 2024, reporting that Miguel had stopped breathing. A post-mortem examination revealed the infant died from severe trauma to the head and neck. Medical examinations also showed bruising on Miguel's head, a skull fissure, bleeding on the brain, and fractures to his collarbone, upper arm, and shin, some of which were of varying ages.

The couple, who reportedly blamed each other during the trial, showed no reaction when their increased sentences were announced. Klevi Pirjani had previously referred to his infant son as a "monster" and "it."
