Law enforcement sources identified the suspect in the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk as 22‑year‑old Utah resident Tyler Robinson, and said Robinson was taken into custody late Thursday in southern Utah after allegedly confessing to his father, who contacted authorities.
According to multiple law enforcement sources and contemporaneous reporting, Robinson’s father, Matt Robinson, is a 27‑year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department who secured his son and notified police before law enforcement assumed custody. Robinson’s mother, Amber Robinson, is reported to work for Intermountain Support Coordination Services, a contractor that helps coordinate care for people with disabilities in Utah.
Officials said the arrest concluded a manhunt that stretched about a day and a half after a shooting Wednesday afternoon at Utah Valley University in Orem. Surveillance footage released by investigators showed a figure on a roof leaping from a building and sprinting into a nearby neighborhood immediately after the shooting, authorities said. Kirk was struck by a single bullet while speaking to a crowd on campus and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities said multiple people had been incorrectly apprehended earlier in the investigation. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox had announced Wednesday evening that a person of interest was in custody; investigators later clarified that the suspect in custody was not the individual who carried out the shooting. Officials also offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the capture of the suspect, law enforcement statements show.
At a Thursday night press conference, officials said Robinson faces potential capital punishment if convicted. Investigators have not publicly disclosed a motive, and officials said the probe remains active.
Reporting from law enforcement sources and public records indicate Robinson was a student at Utah State University on a scholarship. Social media accounts associated with the family portrayed routine family life, including vacation photos and celebratory posts after Robinson was accepted to college. A post from 2017 showed Robinson in a Halloween costume depicting former President Donald Trump, and other images showed firearms, including childhood photos in front of a large-caliber machine gun; the presence of those images has been described by media reports but has not been tied to the investigation by authorities.
Robinson is reported to live in a six‑bedroom home in Washington, Utah, valued at roughly $600,000, about 260 miles south of Orem.
Former President Donald Trump, who on Thursday appeared on a Fox News program to announce the arrest, said "someone very close" to the suspect had turned him in. On Truth Social, Trump posted a tribute calling Kirk "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk," and extended sympathies to Kirk’s family. Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, and their two young children.
Law enforcement officials have said they will provide additional details as the investigation proceeds and as charges are formally filed. Prosecutors and investigators have not released an exact schedule for charges, arraignment or public evidence briefings. The U.S. Department of Justice and local law enforcement agencies are coordinating on the case, according to officials involved in the response.
