The parents of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old who died after being left on an island during a Fourth of July boating trip, are demanding accountability from the friends who were with him. Elmore and Christine Wonsley expressed their grief and suspicion in a CNN interview, questioning the decision of the other teenagers to leave their son behind.

"If I was in that situation, Nolan would’ve got on the boat. I would have not left him there," said Elmore Wonsley, Nolan's father. "You can give all the excuses you want, but you do not leave someone else’s child anywhere if they care."

Wells went missing after a boating excursion to Horn Island, Mississippi, with friends. His body was recovered two days later. According to one of the friends' parents, Wells allegedly chose to stay on the island, stating he would catch a ride with another group also present. However, Wells' parents have voiced concerns about the investigation's transparency and suggest that something may have happened between their son and his friends before his death.

"Nolan just had such a big heart. That was a concern we always had — is that his heart was just too big. We would tell him, that type of love that you give to others is not always reciprocated," Christine Wonsley told CNN.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated that evidence does not yet point to foul play, but the family is pushing for a thorough investigation. The Wells family has also raised suspicions based on their son's recovered phone, noting the absence of Snapchat videos, despite his active use of the app. A video filmed shortly before he disappeared reportedly shows Wells arguing with friends about his cell phone.

An official autopsy is pending from Jackson County officials. The family is also arranging for an independent autopsy, with expenses covered by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The family has transported their son's remains to Washington D.C. for this examination.
