Adam Johnson, 26, and Kylie Smith, 25, of St Helens, have been charged in connection with the death of their one-year-old son, Maero Johnson, from what a postmortem confirmed was severe malnutrition. The infant was rushed to the hospital, but he died in the early hours of August 23, 2023.

The postmortem, conducted by the Home Office, determined the cause of death was ketonic hypoglycaemia and severe malnutrition, conditions typically resulting from prolonged lack of food or illness, often affecting young children. Merseyside Police officers responding to the incident also found a second child to be neglected and underdeveloped.

Both Johnson and Smith face charges of causing or allowing the death of a child, child neglect, and possession of a Class B drug, cannabis. They are scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on August 13.
