Senator Celeste Amarilla of Paraguay has renewed her verbal attacks on French football star Kylian Mbappe, days after France's victory over Paraguay in a World Cup match. Amarilla, who had previously been accused of racism by Mbappe, continued her tirade during a Senate session, calling the footballer a "son of a bitch" and questioning his Frenchness.
In her recent remarks, Amarilla cited an incident where she alleged Mbappe refused to shake hands with Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill. "This son of a bitch refused to shake his hand and shouted in his face," Amarilla declared, contrasting Mbappe's alleged behavior with her perception of French values. She also posted on social media, calling Mbappe "newly rich, arrogant, and ugly" and attributing France's win to "a fluke."
Mbappe responded forcefully to Amarilla's comments, labeling her "despicable" and "unworthy of your position." In a statement, he accused her of "spreading hatred and racism" and stated he would "never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world." The French Football Federation (FFF) echoed Mbappe's stance, with president Philippe Diallo calling Amarilla's remarks "criminal and reprehensible" and announcing the FFF would file a report with the prosecutor's office.
Paraguayan fans have also reacted to the controversy, with some filmed burning effigies of Mbappe during traditional "San Juan" festivities. These celebrations involve burning a doll that represents the country's "most hated person" at the time.
The contentious World Cup match itself was marked by what French media and pundits described as "dirty tactics" employed by the Paraguayan team. Incidents included alleged fouling, faking injuries, and attempts to provoke French players. Mbappe scored the game's only goal from a penalty spot.
Following the match, Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill expressed frustration, claiming Mbappe ignored his attempt to shake hands. He described Paraguay as a "tough team" that makes its presence felt on the field. Mbappe acknowledged the physical nature of the game, stating his team understood the opponent's approach and were prepared to win by any means necessary.
