The Italian contingent at Chelsea has a new face in 21-year-old Marco Palestra, acquired for £47 million from Atalanta. Palestra, who spent last season on loan at Cagliari and was named Serie A Defender of the Year, has drawn comparisons to club legend Gianfranco Zola.

"He's a legend. Maybe I can do what he did at Chelsea," Palestra said, expressing his ambition to emulate Zola's successful tenure at Stamford Bridge. He noted conversations with former Chelsea player Davide Zappacosta, who spoke positively about the club, further influencing his decision.

Palestra chose Chelsea over Italian champions Inter Milan, a club with which he has a historical connection through his grandfather, who played in Inter's academy. The decision was influenced by a conversation with manager Xabi Alonso, who expressed admiration for Palestra's versatility.

"They are one of the biggest clubs in the world. They play in the Premier League, which is the best in the world. I'm excited," Palestra stated, highlighting the allure of English football. He also commented on the current state of the Italian national team, suggesting a move to the Premier League will help him prove himself and potentially aid Italy's future World Cup qualification efforts.

Described as a "Swiss Army Knife" by his new club, Palestra can operate as a full-back or wing-back on either flank. He has already connected with Chelsea captain Reece James, who welcomed him to the club.

Palestra's journey to becoming Italy's fastest footballer is a notable one. He recalls being the slowest player on his team at age 15 but transformed physically and changed positions from midfield to defense, discovering his speed. He was also named Serie A's fastest player last season.

A versatile defender, Palestra can be used as either a full back or a wing back on either side

"When I was young, I remember I was the slowest one in the team, but after maybe one or two years, I grew physically and I changed position," Palestra explained. "Before, I played in midfield, but I changed position to left back or at the back, and I understood that I am quick."

While he is unsure if he is the fastest player at Chelsea currently, he is eager to race his teammates. Palestra aims to prove himself in the Premier League, emphasizing his primary goal is to win for Chelsea, with individual accolades being secondary.

He has also settled into his new surroundings, finding an Italian restaurant near the training ground, which he says is a taste of home amidst English cuisine. The defender's father and mother, who work in office jobs and were not initially avid football followers, are now supportive of his career.

Palestra featured as Chelsea lost 1-0 to Juventus in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday

"If after the season, I also win the Defender of the Year, then I am happy, but I prefer to win something for Chelsea and nothing for me," Palestra concluded, underscoring his team-first mentality.
