Palat and Duclair provide unexpected offensive spark for Islanders

Ondrej Palat and Anthony Duclair are offering a crucial offensive boost for the New York Islanders, proving essential as the team navigates an early-season stretch without star forward Mathew Barzal. Going into the summer, both players were viewed as underperforming assets whose cap hits were a concern, but their early-season production has become a necessary component for the Islanders' forward depth.

Palat, 35, stated that he made adjustments to his offseason training to account for his age, but declined to share specific details. These changes appear to be paying off, as he has displayed increased energy on the ice, and the Islanders' fourth line has been more effective at generating offense. "They’ve been maybe our most consistent line," coach DeBoer said of the unit that also includes Matias Maccelli and Casey Cizikas. "It’s exactly what I talked about at the beginning of the year. The goal isn’t to get out there and survive your shift. It’s to tilt the ice, chip in some goals and help us win games. I think they’ve taken that message and kind of run with it."

This performance marks a shift from the team's previous fourth lines, a role that has been difficult to fill since the departures of Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin. The distribution of ice time reflects DeBoer's trust in the line; entering Saturday's game, the gap between the forward averaging the most 5-on-5 minutes and the fewest was only 2:07, a stark contrast to the previous season's 5:54 gap.

Duclair is also a significant factor in the team's improved offensive output. Following a direct conversation with DeBoer after a subpar performance against the Rangers, Duclair scored his first goal of the season against the Blackhawks. "You look at his career; he’s had some outstanding seasons where he’s put it all together," DeBoer said of Duclair. "I’m not asking him to do anything he hasn’t done before."

While Duclair did not meet the 25-goal, 40-plus point expectations in his first two seasons with the Islanders, DeBoer's continued belief offers a fresh perspective. Duclair himself noted that he feels fully healthy and expressed his commitment to DeBoer's system. "Obviously he’s been around for a long time. He’s a very experienced coach," Duclair said of DeBoer. "He’s had a lot of success over the years, so anything he says, you want to take that and apply it right away. We’ve all bought into his system here the last couple games. It’s just a question of keep building and keep learning."
