Pakistani Forces Neutralize Militants, Rescue Hostages in Southwest Operation
Security forces killed five militants and freed 23 hostages during an operation in Balochistan province.
Pakistani security forces killed five militants in an intense shootout and freed 23 hostages in the country’s southwest, the military announced Sunday. The abduction operation occurred overnight into Saturday when militants established an illegal checkpoint near Kalat in Balochistan province, stopping vehicles to abduct individuals for ransom, extort money, and seize vehicles.
The military statement identified the slain militants as members of “Fitna al-Hindustan,” a designation the Pakistani government uses for the outlawed separatist Baloch Liberation Army and other groups operating in Balochistan that seek independence and which Pakistan alleges are supported by India. India has consistently denied sponsoring militancy in Pakistan.
During the operation, security forces recovered six trucks, three buses, and two cars, along with weapons, ammunition, and explosives. No casualties were reported among security forces or the rescued abductees. Troops were conducting searches of the surrounding area for any remaining militants.
This operation follows recent statements by Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who ruled out negotiations with insurgents and asserted that security operations would continue until militancy was eradicated from the province. Insurgents in the region frequently kidnap people for ransom after setting up illegal checkpoints. Last month, 18 police officers were killed after being abducted.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the security forces for their successful operation and vowed to continue counterterrorism operations to eliminate what he termed foreign-sponsored terrorism.
Balochistan has been the site of a long-standing insurgency, with various separatist groups, including the BLA, advocating for independence from Pakistan's central government. These groups have primarily targeted security forces and individuals from Punjab traveling to Balochistan for business or employment. Despite claims by Pakistani authorities of having suppressed the insurgency, violence in the province has continued.
