Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred from Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical treatment, according to local media reports.
The move follows a ruling by a three-judge Supreme Court panel that ordered Khan be examined by physicians within 48 hours due to reported poor health. His lawyers have stated he suffers from various conditions, including diminished eyesight, and has lacked access to specialist care.
Khan, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2023 on corruption charges, which he maintains are politically motivated. He and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced late last year to 17 years. Khan has faced over 100 cases, including allegations of leaking state secrets and selling state gifts.
The Supreme Court emphasized the constitutional obligation to safeguard a prisoner's life, health, dignity, and security. The ruling specified that an eye specialist would be involved in his treatment.
Khan, who previously captained Pakistan's national cricket team, served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. His imprisonment has been met with large-scale protests by his supporters, leading to a crackdown by authorities.
Despite his incarceration, Khan remains a significant political figure in Pakistan, with a substantial base of support.
