Police officers in Porthcawl, Wales, demonstrated bravery by entering the sea at night to apprehend Gavin Bennett, 45, who attempted to escape arrest by wading into the waves. The incident occurred on the evening of October 22 of the previous year when Bennett, wearing a white jumper, entered the water around 9:45 p.m.

Bodycam footage captured the officers pursuing Bennett as he entered the sea. One officer can be heard stating, "I am gonna have to go in," while also cautioning a colleague, "be careful in the current."

Despite the risks associated with the currents and low visibility, the officers followed Bennett. He was subsequently brought ashore and arrested by officers from Bridgend. Following his arrest, Bennett was taken to a hospital for medical checks before returning to custody.

Bennett was wanted for sending inappropriate messages to a schoolgirl he believed to be under the age of 16. The matter was reported to police in August 2023, stemming from a victim's disclosure of repeated sexual assaults over a two-year period.

Within three days of his arrest, Bennett pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child at Cardiff Crown Court. He was also sentenced for two counts of sexually assaulting a female. On the day of the sentencing, Bennett was jailed for three years and eight months.
