The San Diego Padres have expressed interest in shortstop Dax Kilby, a highly-touted prospect in the New York Yankees' system, as the Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches. The Padres inquired about Kilby, whom the Yankees selected with the 39th overall pick in the 2025 draft, according to reports.
The Padres' interest became apparent when they asked about Kilby's recent promotion from the Florida Complex League to Low-A Tampa. Simultaneously, the Yankees have reportedly been monitoring Padres players, with the teams actively scouting each other ahead of potential deals.
Kilby, 19, missed a significant portion of the current season due to a hamstring injury but recently returned to action. In 104 minor league plate appearances over the past two seasons, he has posted a .318 batting average, a .423 on-base percentage, and a .432 slugging percentage, with one home run, six extra-base hits, and 16 stolen bases.
The Yankees are reportedly seeking upgrades to their roster before the trade deadline, and a deal with the Padres could potentially involve star closer Mason Miller. Miller has been a dominant force this season, allowing only four earned runs in 43 2/3 innings. Hypothetical packages for Miller from the Yankees have included prospects like Kilby and pitcher Carlos Lagrange, along with other pitching and outfield prospects.
Earlier this month, reports indicated that the Padres might be open to trading key players such as Miller, starter Michael King, and reliever Adrian Morejon if they decide to sell assets. The Padres currently hold a 53-53 record and are 1.5 games out of a National League Wild Card spot, leaving their deadline strategy uncertain as they weigh playoff contention against potential asset liquidation.
